I am offering a Creative Ability Development (CAD) teacher-training course on Saturday, August 25 from 9:30AM-3:30PM at the Conservatoire de musique de Gatineau. I am one of only three CAD teacher-trainers. The others are Alice Kanack who originated the method and Dr. Sera Smolen of Ithaca, NY.
Creative Ability Development is a method that uses teaching music improvisation to develop the creative side of the brain. Even if you have very little or no experience improvising yourself, you can teach CAD.
CAD is not a jazz method. You will not learn riffs or be told what notes to play. As a classical musician, you will find the method very comfortable. You will improvise in a safe, accepting and encouraging environment. You will experience the same games you will teach your students as well as learn about the philosophy of CAD and learn how to teach your own students to improvise in private and group settings. We will also explore Sera Smolen's brand new materials that explore non-classical genres of music "Off the Page."
Course cost $75

Creative Ability Development (CAD/Improvisation) is an integral part of the Rideau Falls Violins Suzuki program. Each group class has a CAD component. Just as all children are born with the potential to develop a high ability on their instrument, all children are born with the potential to develop their creative side to a high level. All students will be expected to practice their improvisation assignments each day, along with their regular violin assignments. These assignments involve playing along with a recording, so be sure to have a CD player or mp3 player available in the room where you practice with your child. Beginners will practice with a piano or keyboard, so please have one available as well.
